,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]Concussion Sidelines Giants' Kevin Boss
Kevin Boss is no [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the four-time Pro Bowl tight end he succeeded in New York, nor a Mark Bavaro, who caught the most passes of any Giant during the team's 1986 and 1990 championship seasons. But the 26-year-old Boss has been a reliable safety valve for Eli Manning since he replaced the injured [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] as the starter in December 2007.
That status is in jeopardy now that Boss is dealing with effects of his third concussion in three years, one that will sideline him for at least this week's game at Indianapolis. Second-year tight end Travis Beckum will make his third career start in place of Boss, whose three concussions Giants coach Tom Coughlin termed "a major concern." Bear Pascoe, promoted from the practice squad, will back up Beckum.
Boss has had headaches since being slammed by airborne Carolina safety Sherrod Martin during the first quarter of New York's 31-18 opening victory but he's "pretty certain" that he'll return for the Sept. 26 game against Tennessee.
"I think they're just trying to be conservative about it," Boss said. "I think they don't want to have one of those things where I get concussed in back-to-back weeks and start to miss big chunks of time. They're trying to take the right precautionary measures. None of (the concussions) are real serious where I've blacked out or can't remember anything."
Oddly, Boss didn't suffer a concussion on vicious hits he absorbed last year from Arizona's Antrel Rolle (now a teammate) and San Diego's Eric Weddle. However, the Giants revealed that Boss did suffer a concussion in Denver, three weeks after the Chargers' game, perhaps because of the cumulative effects of the previous blows to his head.
As for Martin's hit which had Coughlin fuming, Boss said, "They're talking about trying to protect defenseless receivers, and I felt like I was pretty defenseless. But at the same time ... I know they're trying to make a play on the ball. It's not something where I'm going to hold a grudge against the guy."
