[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is loyal to Buffalo Bills, almost to a fault
ORCHARD PARK — There is so much [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] could say about the never-ending plight of the Buffalo Bills offense, but somehow, despite enduring six-plus years of utter frustration, he chooses the high road.
“I think more so than that, you play this game for the people around you,” he said Sunday in the gloom of the Buffalo locker room following a 34-7 decimation inflicted by Green Bay.
“If it was that easy to sit here and blame one thing or another, then I’d probably be miserable. It’s Week 2. We still have at least 14 games left to play.”
That is [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’ way. Rather than rail on about the lousy quarterbacking, the inept play of the offensive line which helps contribute to the lousy quarterbacking, and the lack of any other legitimate receivers who can help take the pressure — not to mention constant double-teaming — off him, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] keeps his mouth shut through all the losing, and soldiers on.
If there were a Pro Bowl for diplomacy, he’d be a unanimous choice every year.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] had four catches for 34 yards in the season opener against Miami. At Green Bay he had no receptions for just the third time in his 98-game NFL career. Only one ball was even directed his way, and that resulted in a 24-yard interference penalty on Charles Woodson because [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] had beaten him, and Woodson had no choice in order to save a probable touchdown.
Imagine being a No. 1 wide receiver in the NFL, and never being tackled in a game. And then imagine the nerve Randy Moss has to complain about his situation in New England when compared to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’ situation in Buffalo.
It borders on criminal how the Bills have wasted [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’ talent all these years. Oh, except for one, 2006, when the quarterback everyone loves to hate, J.P. Losman, found a way to get 82 balls into [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’ hands for 1,282 yards and 8 TDs.
“It is frustrating,” said [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though his voice remained on an even keel with no malice detected. “Anytime you lose and you don’t feel like you contributed to making a difference, it’s difficult.”
Some might say that [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] made his own bed, and now he must toss and turn in it. Remember,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he could have left Buffalo via free agency after the 2008 season, but he accepted a lucrative contract extension that could pay him just under $40 million if he plays for the life of it through 2012.
He had a chance to escape the drudgery of playing for a franchise that has been clueless in the art of winning games. But that’s not [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]’ way, either. Rather than bolt for greener pastures, he stayed put in this relative cow pasture in the hopes that the Bills would bring in some pieces to help turn things around.
His reward for that loyalty? Incredibly, despite glaring evidence to the contrary, the new regime led by Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey remained status quo at quarterback this year.
No other quarterback was brought in this offseason to challenge the forgettable trio of Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm. Not in the draft (as a seventh-rounder, the departed Levi Brown doesn’t count) or free agency, and the Bills will pay a painful price all year because of it.
The Bills also passed on drafting a stud offensive tackle in last April’s draft, even though the need was screaming at them louder than heavy metal. Despite already having two good backs on the roster, running back C.J. Spiller was the choice. They’re going to pay for that one this year, too.
And of course, they let Terrell Owens leave after one season, and while that wasn’t entirely a poor decision, not upgrading at the receiver position certainly was. Thus, the Bills are left with the likes of Steve Johnson and Roscoe Parrish.
Bills fans are feeling hopeless at this point. Ten years without a playoff appearance, no doubt going on 11. So think of how [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] must feel? He splits out wide, runs route after route in the fruitless hope that the ball might come his way, while looking over his shoulder as punter Brian Moorman prepares to enter the game.
“It’s tough,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “There’s not a whole lot to say. But it’s still early and hopefully we can move forward and get past this and get in rhythm and get some wins on the board.”
He really should be miserable. It says a lot about his character that he’s not.
