Money Management Financial Aid and Other Things College Students Should Know About
When I entered college I instantly realized that there were things I needed to know that Mom and Dad forgot to teach me. I know there are thousands of other college students out there that were in the exact same predicament I was in. Now, I'm definitely not your mother, but I believe that you will benefit greatly from what I'm about to tell you.
I cannot cover everything a student needs to know before entering college in an article like this, however, I will give an overview of a few important things including money management, finding financial aid, cooking, and managing your time.
Managing Your Money:
These are my three tips for managing your money.
1- Create a budget. I know it's hard in the beginning but it will really reduce financial tension in the long run. If you don't know how to create a budget, search the internet or ask your friends or parents.
2- Never spend more than you make. If you are in the habit of spending more than you are making you either need to increase your income or reduce your expenses. There are many ways to reduce expenses.
3- Pay your bills when their due. Just do it. Do not get into more debt than you have to.
How to Find Financial Aid:
Scholarships, grants and loans are you finance options. You can find scholarships at your college, on the internet, through clubs, businesses, and organizations. Open your eyes to scholarships and you'll find that they are everywhere.
The most popular way to obtain a grant is through the government. In order to do this you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Fill out this application on the internet or in your financial aid office.
There are two types of student loans: Federal and alternative student loans. Some Federal loans are the Stafford, Perkins, Parent PLUS, and Graduate PLUS loans. A private loan may be obtained through a financial institutions.
College Cooking:
Contrary to popular belief, cooking doesn't have to be complicated. There are plenty of simple recipes that anyone can put together. In fact, loads of recipe books have been written specifically for college students! Consider purchasing one of these recipe books.
If you don't feel like getting out the cook book all you need to do is assess the food you have, decide what items would taste good together, and toss them into a frying pan. Use meat, noodles, or rice as your base and then add vegetables.
Time Management:
Time is precious, manage it wisely. Here are some of my time management tips:
1. Prioritize- As long as you get the really important things done, nothing else matters.
2. Schedule- Each person needs an individual schedule that matches them. Try out different schedules to determine which one works best for you..
3. Follow the Schedule- If you re in class, BE in class. Do not dose off or daydream. If the teacher gets off topic, do your homework from another class. If it's time to study, study. Do not go to the library for an hour just to end up gazing out the window for forty five minutes. When it's time to relax (and you definitely need to take time to relax), relax. Follow your schedule.
