r>Antique typewriters are an extremely popular collectible item as a favorite among many decorators who like to use them to add to the ambience of certain designs. If you are considering becoming a collector of antique typewriters there are a few things you should know before you make your first purchase.
One of the first things you should learn is some of the terminology related to antique typewriters. The term carriage is used to describe the cylinder that moves from the left to the right and back again. The cylinder may also be known as a platen. A motor, called a clockwork, is used to move the cylinder back and forth again. The set of keys which the writers uses to make selections is known as the keyboard; although this is not always present on all models.
Most early typewriters use a wide variety of different mechanisms. Some of these typewriters use an index body while others use keyboards. The typewriters that consisted of an index, which the user would use to select a character. Another action would then need to be performed in order for that character to be typed. Furthermore, there are many different types of index typewriters. These include square and curved.

In machines that use this method, the writer will not be able to see what has just been typed without lifting up the carriage. Later, downstrike machines were developed, with the typebar located above the carriage. The view of the paper could still be blocked with this type of location; however, which led to the development of frontstroke typewriters in which the type occurs on the front of the printing surface.
There are also differences in the ways that the rows, or banks, of keys are arranged on older typewriters. In some cases they were arrange in straight rows while in others they might be arranged in a slight curve. Some machines also had keys that were arranged in a circle.
The mechanisms typically varied according to manufacturer. For example, Glidden typewriters carried a typebar while some older machines used a single element such as a type cylinder or a type shuttle; which is a mechanism shaped like a C.
In order to obtain the best collectible typewriters, you will need to know quite a bit about each type of model. If you are planning to purchase typewriters with the thought of keeping them for value purposes, you should know that the most highly valued antique typewriters are those that are quite rare. The more rare a typewriter is, the more expensive it will be. Other factors that can also affect the price include type of mechanism, condition and the attractiveness of the individual design. Of course, personal interest can also play a role.
