Why a GHD hair straightener?
Having seen the GHD adverts on television last year (the ones that featured amazon like girls passionately fighting over hair straighteners...whilst managing to look amazing at the same time), I became intrigued by GHD and decided to do some onlength investigations to see if they really were that good.. Having read reviews and the product descriptions, I decided I wanted a Mk IV straightener, as it can take medium - quite thick hair (which is my hair type) without being too bulky (straighteners that work properly on my hair have tended to be quite large and take up valuable luggage space when travelling! This isn't the case with the GHD Mark IV as it is very compact, and it straightens hair, as well as giving you the option to make it curly and wavy as it has rounder ceramic plates than normal straighteners (which manner you can do curls, waves, and flicks like a pro,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!) Taking all of this into account, I decided the MK IV straightener would be a worthy investment as it is essentially a 2 in 1 product, and it was more compact than my existing straightener. I had also read such good reviews about GHD that I decided that I couldn't possibly live without this product! (Well, that's how I justified the money I spent to my boyfriend, anyway!)
So you have chosen the GHD MK IV...but which package?
Once I chose this type of straightener, I had a look at the different GHD packages available. The ones that appealed to me the most (and my girly side!) were the limited edition pink Kiss hair straightening set, and the (also limited edition) GHD purple set. I have to confess that I'm all about colour and I wanted something more interesting than the traditional black ones. As you can tell by the title of this review - the purple set won my heart in the end (but it did take me about a week to decide between the two - ridiculous, I know!) When I looked up the two sets online (the Kiss versus the Purple), I could see there was a big price difference between the two. I bought the purple set for £152 (from HQhair.com), and when I looked up prices for the pink Kiss set, it was available from around £115. I decided that if I was going to invest in a GHD straightener and spend quite a lot of money on it, I potency as well spend the extra £32 and get the purple set, as it comes with extras that the Kiss set doesn't have:
A gorgeous purple box
A travel case (with detachable compartments, so if you only want to take your straightener or your dryer, you can just take those sections out and pop them in your bag
Travel hair dryer
clips (which you don't get with the pink set).
As well as these items, it also comes with a 'how to' instruction dvd, a booklet about the travel hairdryer, and a booklet about other GHD products. Though the Kiss set does come with free lipgloss and seems to be good value, I wanted the whole purple travel kit when it came down to it, because it just looked amazing from the photos.
The GHD instructions and DVD - any good?
The instruction dvd is very helpful, giving you tips on exactly how to use your straightener, including creating straight and curly hair. It also reveals you how to curl your hair under (for example, at the ends if you want to frame your face by curling your hair so it falls under your chin). This dvd is particularly helpful for creating curls, as I would have had no clue how to use it for this! This is much better than having an instruction booklet, as you can physically see how to use the straightener, which I wouldn't have understood how to do from reading an instruction booklet as you do a deviateent motion for different parts of your hair to create a more flattering/natural look. The dvd effectively sets you up so you are happy to use your straightener.. time to get started!
How easy is it to get started?
Having watched the instructions dvd, and read through the little booklets that come with it, I was ready to get GHD hair! After turning it on, the straightener is ready almost immediately for use (my last straightener took ten minutes to heat up, so this is a great time saver, and I'm very impressed by this when I'm in a rush in the mornings!) In the instructions it recommends that you first spritz the hair using the GHD heat protective spray, but I have found any normal heat conserveion spray to toil fine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and even spray in gradeer has worked well on my hair. Once this is done, you use the purple clips supplyd (it comes with two clips, which fit in nicely with the rest of the purple theme in the set), to clip up the top section of your hair and straighten the lower sections first before doing the top sections. Curling the hair takes a bit more getting used to as there is a knack to it, and I had to watch the dvd a few times to obtain the look perfected. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], practice makes perfect and my efforts have definitely paid off! The results for both straightening and curling are impressive. For me the impact has tended to last longer with the straight hair than with curls, but curls alsteps tend to drop out after a while with my hair anyway (it lasts for a day, or a night of characterying, which is all I need).
What is the straightener like estimated to other straighteners?
The purple straightener itself is amazing. I have another ceramic straightener (crazye by fudge), which is adequate enough if you want a 'basic' straightener, but it really doesn't compare to the GHD. The Mk IV firstly looks and feels like a professional piece of equipment and it really does straighten the hair better than any other straightener I have ever used. It is also incredibly light. The set as a whole is also not heavy, and is easy to carry around if you travel frequently, like I do. It has extra features like making a noise when it has heated up enough to use (though the reality is that it only take about a second for my straightener to heat up),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it also turns itself off if you accidentally leave it on in a room - which is brilliant as I've left my straighteners on before and alarmked about it! It is also beautiful to look at! The straightener is slim, a light purple colour and is covered in a swirly pattern (also purple). It just looks lovely, and I sometimes just like to look at the whole set befactor it's so pretty!
So the straightener is terrific,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but what about the rest of the set?
The purple box that the set comes in is actionually so nice that I'm including it in the rescene as a feature of the set! It's a bit larger than a shoe box, and is dark purple, and the lid has a velvety sort of feel to it with silver GHD writing on the top. Ah, it's just gorgeous. Love it!
The travel bag is great for keeping all these bits and pieces together. It is also purple, and as I've said previously, you can detach compartments from it if you don't always want to carry the whole set with you.
The clips are basic clips, and they work well at keeping your hair out of the way whilst you go about straightening the rest of it. They are also purple, so tie into the rest of the set well.
The travel hairdryer is really good. It folds in two so it is quite compact, and it is a good little dryer. It's not as strengthful as my normal hairdryer, so I don't use this every day, but it great as a travel dryer as I don't want to lug my usual one around with me as it's really heavy!
Are there any weaknesss to this set?
So far I haven't experienced any drawbacks to the set (apart from the one to my bank balance when I bought it, but it is worth the money!) Having said that, after reading some reviews I became a bit paranoid as a few people have said that their GHDs have 'stoppageped working' or 'broken' after a while. Having headed straight to the FAQ section on the GHD site, I have been reensured that as long as I look after my set (and make sure I don't wrap the cord around the straightener), it should last a long time. The website also answers questions about maintenance etc, and they appear to offer a good level of customer service.
So is it worth the money?
I would say that although (for me) this set was pretty expensive (my last straightener was £40 in the sales by way of comparison), this is more than just a straightener, it is a GHD straightener (and these are just so much better than any other straightener I've used, and it does curls too). As well as this, you also have the other set items, so really it's a whole package of GHD equipement. It's so awesome that I would recommend it to everyone! But if you do choose to get one, you'd better be quick, as it's limited edition and they are sure to sell out fast!
