A Tiled Floor Adds A Touch Of Luxury
There is no doubt there is something of an air of luxury about the use of tiling for walls and flooring. This probably comes from the history of their use. In ancient times the everyday house of working class people would have had dirt floors or at best wooden floorboards. It was through Islamic art that tile manufacturing developed in Spain which is now one of the things Spain is renowned for. Tiling has therefore always had this sense of luxury and wealth. It is also known for its durability as tiled floors and walls are as beautiful today as when they were first constructed.

The main reason for this is that although a large range of tiles are available in natural materials such as slate and stone, there has been increasing use of ceramic printing techniques to produce a wider range of tile products at much more accessible prices. The result has been an explosion in the types of tiles and flooring that are now available.
In the domestic situation ceramic and stone tiles and flooring have mainly been used in wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms although in hotter countries they are also used in main living areas as they give a cooler feel under foot. This however is seen as one of their drawbacks when used in this country. This can be overcome by introducing underfloor heating mats to keep the floors warmer. In retrofit situations these are usually low wattage electric heating tapes laid in the mortar bed below the tiling and ensures that the floors are always at a comfortable temperature.
But these developments have not only been in ceramic and stone tiles and flooring. There have also been developments in vinyl floor tiling. These came in a variety of styles and patterns and usually look similar to ceramic tiling. However they have two advantages. First of all they are relatively inexpensive and are quicker to lay. The second is that they are warmer under foot especially when laid onto concrete floors.
