A member of a celibacy club [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], high school student Dawn O’Keefe (Jess Weixler) is finding it difficult to practice what she preaches after meeting Tobey (Hale Appleman). Horror Movie Review: Teeth
Most of the humour comes from the central premise. The idea of evolution protecting the female side of the species by installing a self defence mechanism inside the vagina is one, which balances between comedy and horror. Some scenes are horrific and designed to provoke strong reactions. Others are merely played for laughs and stop this from being merely a preachy feminist movie. It’s interesting to note that Teeth (as well as Hard Candy) is directed by a man, in this case Mitchell Lichtenstein, who makes this more tongue in check than man-hating revenge fantasy. Not that this would necessarily be different if directed by a woman but its worth pointing out.
This is entirely done on purpose as female nudity is frequent in the slasher subgenre, seemingly only there to provide male titillation. It seems Lichtenstein is attempting to turn the tables [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], retain woman’s dignity in horror movies and expose the misogynistic attitudes of generic horror fare. A lot of fifteen year old boys are unlikely to be interested in these thematic undertones and will bemoan the lack of female nudity on display but that is precisely the point.
Most significant however are the themes of extreme bodily horror and how they are presented. Not only is the concept unique but the idea of the woman being able to control this mutation is intriguing, if not fully realised. This may not be explored in a huge amount of depth but it does manage to echo the early underground work of David Cronenberg. While lacking the visual sophistication of the Canadian filmmaker (Teeth is pretty bland in the cinematography departme
Woman in horror films are usually given a bad deal. Since the early days of the genre, where they were merely there to be seduced and killed by Dracula, this has almost always been the case. Obviously there are exceptions; Marilyn Chambers in Rabid was the victim and the killer, Sigourney Weaver was the lone survivor in Alien and Jamie Lee Curtis managed to stay alive in Halloween. Recently however, with the release of both Teeth and Hard Candy, this has gone even further and women have started to take revenge. While Hard Candy depicted a young girl turning the tables on an adult predator in deeply serious fashion, Teeth is far more comedic.
Saying this however, the men depicted in the film do not come across well and clearly sympathies lie with the heroine. In fact most of the men, despite some of their attempts at righteousness, are despicable human beings who either cause emotional or physical harm to Dawn. Even the gynaecologist seems odd and more than a little creepy, despite not actually doing anything wrong. These sympathies can not only be seen from a character point of view but a visual one as well [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because despite the conventions of the genre and what you may expect from the concept, there is no female nudity and a fair amount of disturbing, horrific and shocking male nudity. This entirely consists of seeing the aftermath of Dawn’s sexual revenge and dignified it is not.
