Their timing is great [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the recent interest in the Carter/Cash families, and it is actually son John Carter Cash who produced and recorded "Home to You," calling upon more of his connections to include Randy Scruggs' guitar and Jamie Hartford's mandolin. But it is the Peasall Sisters who make "Home to You" the charmer that it is. They even wrote many of the 12 tracks, including a moving tribute ("Logtown") to their mother's original Mississippi home, flooded over to make room for a NASA center. They also wrote the opening title track, with its lush strings and sweet vocals, in honor of a family friend's response to Christ. My favorite is the smokin' "Freight Train Blues," its strings and harmonies so tight you fear for their safety. "The Old Church Yard" has the feel of a traditional song, with its soaring fiddle lines and pretty picking, and it shows off the girls' vocal skills, as does the quieter "Angel Band" and "Fair and Tender Ladies." But it is the acapella closer "Where No One Stands Alone" that really highlights the sisters' veritable vocal chops. Not only do their voices shine with the force of a lighthouse beam, but their sincere faith imbues every track.
The Peasall Sisters are Sarah (1, Hannah (14), and Leah (12) and they play guitar, mandolin, and fiddle, respectively. To the rest of us who only know teenagers whose skills include lightning-speed text-messaging and mind-boggling multi-tasking (TV, phone, computer), the Peasall Sisters may initially confound. They are a different breed of teen, as well as proficient both vocally and instrumentally, and a deep sincerity pours from these down home songs. You don't have to love bluegrass to enjoy "Home to You."
And that's the interesting part: they didn't either, prior to the movie. Homeschooled, they listened to a lot of Contemporary Christian and worship music [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but before "Brother," they had very little exposure to the world of bluegrass, making the sweet sizzle of "Home to You" all the more stunning.
The bluegrass music of "Home to You" may not be your usual taste, but remember [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], change is good. Let the fresh winds of the Peasall Sisters blow the cobwebs out for you.
