"I never had a problem with my weight before that," she explains. "But even though I was not eating anymore than usual, the weight kept piling on and I have not been able to lose it. I have even tried diets and new excercise regimes but nothing seems to work."
So it would seem that sufferers of depression such as Michelle are faced with a dilemma. Do they carry on with their current antidepressant and make ever more drastic lifestyle changes to try and accomodate weight loss [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or do they risk changing medications in order to try and lose weight? Perhaps more research is needed into just why antidepressants such as Zoloft cause weight gain [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a side effect so counterproductive in the fight against depression.
But a 2003 study by Dartmouth Medical School found that two thirds of patients who had gained over 65 pounds after being put on antidepressants could be helped to lose a large proportion of that weight with changes to their lifestyle and nutrition.
"Raise the issue with your doctor," Dr Fernstrom from the University of Pittsburg advises. "Say that you are concerned about weight gain as a side effect and ask if there are other medications available. If the drug of choice is the only option, and you do notice weight gain, you can make lifestyle choices."
It comes as no surprise, then, to hear that Michelle is worried that her extreme weight gain apparently caused by the drug Zoloft will pull her moods down lower than before because of the way her self esteem is being affected.
Michelle, a thirty seven year old woman who was diagnosed with depression two years ago, tells me she has put on over 70 pounds since her doctor prescribed her Zoloft.

How to Handle Antidepressants and Weight Gain
Michelle [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it would seem, is not alone. All antidepressants have the potential to make the patient gain weight, with Zoloft becoming known as the "weight gain drug." Antidepressants slow the metabolism and inhibit specific enzymes in the liver that allow the metabolism to function correctly. Many antidepressants also also increase appetite and carbohydrate cravings. Antidepressants like Zoloft are also shown to cause hormonal changes, which can further add to weight gain.
"I have read on the internet that Wellbutrin - a different antidepressant - can help some women lose weight, but not all," she says. "I am feeling so low that I am ready to try and go through the withdrawal symptoms of Zoloft if it means I can regain a normal weight and treat my depression at the same time."
