The rich and varied history of Amsterdam occupies a former children's home built in the 17th century. The focus is largely on the 17th century and the trades that made Amsterdam the richest city in the world at the height of its Golden Age. The original children's home on the site dated from 1579,Laguna Beach jeans for men, part of St Lucy's Convent, and was demolished when the current orphanage building was constructed in the 17th century. The building had been in use as a home for children until the 20th century. In 1975 the Amsterdam Historisch Museum moved into the premises. Paintings by well-known Dutch artists, including Rembrandt, portray the history of Amsterdam,Women's Nike Shox R4, including an interesting display of 14 portraits of the Civic Guard protected by a glass enclosure. The entire collection of paintings spans several centuries, styles and historical periods. The original carillon bells that once hung in the Munt Tower are also displayed here, as are suits of armour and old maps of the world,Jordan 16, dating back to the early period of exploration. Over the entrance gate,Air max 95, off Kalverstraat. is a carving of orphan boys.
The Governors' room where the governors or regents held their meetings from 1634 until 1960 still exists and is open to the public. During the museum's renovation in the 1960s the room was refurbished in order to re-create a classical 17th-century atmosphere. The splendid painted ceiling was also fully restored. Prominent group portraits have hung here since the 17th century. There is also a fine collection of engravings. Special exhibitions are held periodically throughout the year.
The growth of the city from the period 1000 to 2000 is explained by interesting map and video displays. The museum houses collections from the 1400s to the present day, some of which are on loan from the Rijks Museum. The history of Amsterdam is also imaginatively reconstructed through the museum's excellent collections which include, among others: Pilgrims' tokens, silver artifacts, glassware, jewelery,Shmack Shoes, clothing and shoes, ship and shipbuilding models, porcelain,Dior Earrings, statues and other items belonging to the city's residents over the past six centuries.
The Amsterdams Historisch Museum also has a dynamic on line E-museum with programmes containing a resource of hundreds of photos along with fragments of historic film and documentaries from the Dutch archives on a wide range of subjects such as the 30 Amsterdam districts, fashion and transport in bygone eras. For more than 200 years the orphanage on this site was the focus of processions held in honour of the Miracle of Amsterdam. When a dying man received the last rites from a priest, the man was sick and his vomit was thrown into the fire, but the communion wafer did not burn. The man was healed and the house was declared a miracle site where a chapel was later built. Pilgrims came from all over Europe to this shrine. After the Reformation, the wafer was relegated to a wooden chest and placed in the attic of the orphanage.
