They’re talking about regime change in Cairo and, from what I hear, in Calcutta. But where I am, a somewhat monumental event has already happened: after 15 years, I’ve changed my cigarette brand. Cigarettes might not be the most healthy way of highlighting the value of choice. But the fact is that if you’re moved enough to change your brand of cigarette, you know that you’re part of an extremely moveable species.
Among the over-the-counter drugs, nicotine’s got to be the most tenacious habit-forming substance. It’s a Catholic-style no-divorcer on par with under-the-counter rotten goodies such as heroin and cocaine. So what’s surprising for me is that cigarette smokers actually bother about what brand they’re smoking. A Big Tobacco friend of mine tells me that the ingredients don’t vary much at all across brands. It’s mostly habit that makes one company’s 84 mm long ‘king size’ fag ‘taste’ different from that of another company;
it’s not about whether it’s ‘honey dew’ or ‘Turkish blend’. “These are products that would make Joe Camel blush,” said Sen. Scott White, D-Seattle, the bill’s primary sponsor. White said he was open to the idea of amending the bill so that it did not ban the products entirely in order to address opponents’ concerns about adult free choice. Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, a Seattle Democrat and the chairwoman of the committee,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],wholesale newport cigarettes, said she expected the bill to be amended before it had a vote.
She said she was concerned that the language of the bill was too broad and could include some cigars and other products that do not target children. New Jersey is not the only state to face budget crises in the last few years. As such, it is not the only state to cut funding for anti-tobacco programs. While New Jersey has committed just $600,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 toward anti-tobacco programs in the current budget year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nevada ($2.9 million last year) and Ohio ($6 million last year) have cut their funding for anti-smoking initiatives to zero in the current budget cycle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to data from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
Connecticut has cut its funding for such programs from $6.1 million last year to $400,000 in fiscal year 2011. “States,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], overall, just about all of them are failing miserably at funding these programs. They’ve never done a good job with this, but it’s gotten much worse in recent years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” said McGoldrick. “The spending on these programs peaked around 2002 and, because of so many bad budget cycles, has gone down ever since.” Still, New Jersey stands out from the pack in how much things have changed.
By cutting $7 million in funding in one year, New Jersey fell from the 37th best state at funding anti-tobacco programs to the 46th best. Electronic cigarettes are drawing heavy media and marketing attention, and while a new study finds that consumer interest also runs high,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a companion study underscores that e-cigarettes’ ability to help smokers cut down or quit is unknown. E-cigarettes run on batteries and look like real cigarettes, cigars or even ballpoint pens. Users inhale doses of nicotine or other toxins found in tobacco in vapor form.
Because e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco or create smoke, manufacturers are marketing them both as a safer alternative to smoking and as a cessation aid. Of the two studies appearing online and in the April issue American Journal of Preventive Medicine, one shows that consumer interest in e-cigarettes currently is much higher than interest in more traditional products.
