Types and Symptoms of African Horse Sickness
Acute pulmonary - This type is known as the lung form and has the highest mortality rate, according to Defra, 95% of acute pulmonary affected horses die within a week; this type has a short incubation period of 3-5 days.
AHS is a non-contagious disease, meaning it cannot be passed directly between horses; however, a horse with AHS can remain infected for several weeks, heightening the risk of non-infected midges feeding on the infected blood and becoming carriers of the AHSV, thus continuing the potential rapid spread of the disease. African horse sickness is therefore classed as a highly infectious disease, notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
Mixed type - This form is a combination of acute pulmonary and subacute cardiac types. The disease starts with mild respiratory signs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], followed by the swellings associated with the cardiac type; incubation period is from 5-7 days.

Equine Respiratory Disease
There are three main forms of AHS with varied symptoms dependant on the type.
A fourth mild form of AHS, known as horse sickness fever, is mainly found in donkeys and zebras which have a resistance to the development of the disease in full. This form is uncommon in the highly susceptible horse, and has an incubation period of 5-9 days.
African horse sickness is a disease caused by the African horse sickness virus (AHSV). The African horse sickness virus is an Orbivirus (from the Reoviridae family of viruses), with nine different strains; primarily carried and transmitted by species of the midge Culicoids family. Once a horse has been bitten by a midge carrying the AHSV, the horse becomes infected with the viral disease African horse sickness. Typically,Cheap Air Jordans What Is Politics, warm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], moist weather and heavy rainfall are the climatic conditions favoured by the AHSV carrying midges, with wind dispersal a possible explanation for the spread of the disease.
Subacute cardiac - This type is known as the heart form and has an incubation period of 7-14 days; according to Defra, mortality is around 60%, with death resulting from heart failure.
A rise in temperature is apparent in the first few days of infection. The fever abates in a few days and recovery followsPartial appetite lossA slight cough and breathlessnessConjuctivitis may be presentTreatment of AHS

African horse sickness (AHS) is a variant of the cattle and sheep disease bluetongue; affecting all species of equidae. Typically, AHS is a disease affecting areas of Africa, however, as climate change continues, concerns have been raised that the disease is spreading due to warmer and windier weather. According to The British Horse Society, horses are the most susceptible species, and up to 90% of infected horses die.
