driving test is a necessity; there are really no two ways about it. Beyond driving lessons or driving courses, there must be some sort of assessment to ensure that the candidate is fully (or at least as much as possible) prepared to drive independently on the UK roads.
That said, there is a constant grumble among driving instructors about the ever changing and unofficial goal posts that learner drivers have to contend with, depending upon which examiner takes them out on driving test and even the same examiner on a different day. One day a pupil can get away with doing something that they would be failed for on another day or a different assessor. This could also vary from Leicester to London or from Norwich to Nottingham.
This frustration is partly due to the driving instructor appearing incompetent or money grabbing to spend additional time (paid for by the learner driver) working on a specific area of the pupils skills [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and as well as informing them of the safety issues, re-enforcing the information with, an examiner would say (Based on previous experience of different tests) only to find that the candidate does that very thing on test and the examiner completely ignores it or marks it much more harshly than before.
What can be done about this, after all, it can be an unnecessary expense for the candidate who is the real loser in all this?
The DSA are trying to take some steps to reduce inconsistency. The main one is supervising examiners (if an examiner is found to have a higher or lower pass rate than his/her colleagues in the same driving test centre, a more senior examiner will sit in on test to assess whether the first examiner is being too lenient/harsh).
Although the DSA have to be acknowledged for making an effort to rectify the situation, the newly created need for examiners to remain close to each others pass rates leaves a further temptation to exercise further inconsistency. For example [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if an examiner realises that they have had quite a string of passes, there would be a temptation to rectify that with a fail!
All we can do (as driving schools) in the mean time as we wait for a more thorough solution to the problem is to make sure that pupils are thoroughly prepared through sufficient, good quality driving lessons after all, it is more likely to be the borderline issues that are likely to be the questionable results [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
