Can Clinton Sort Out The Problem Of Health Insurance For Those With Pre-existing Conditions?
As the Presidential Election heats up it is no surprise to find that health care and in particular health insurance is at the head of the agenda and, for many people, the prospect of solving the problem of getting low cost health insurance for those suffering from pre-existing conditions might make Hillary Clinton's proposal an attractive choice. But can it work?
As with most proposals it sounds fantastic and promises to offer new options for people who presently have health insurance coverage and also for the forty-seven million US citizens who are currently without any form of health insurance coverage. In addition, it promises to lower your monthly premiums and give you greater security of cover. For those suffering from pre-existing conditions it promises to "end discrimination based on pre-existing conditions or expectations of illness".
This new plan to solve America's health insurance requirements calls upon providers to work collaboratively with both patients and employers to provide a high quality of health care at a price which is affordable and also calls upon government to reform the health care system in order to both increase the quality of care and reduce costs.
This of course is exactly what everyone wants to see but if it was that simple why is the health care system in such a mess today and why are costs climbing rather than declining?
The truth is that this is merely the latest in a long list of proposals to sort out the health insurance system and is pie in the sky. Essentially it is nothing more than a political plan which is very well written and excellently presented and will no doubt to some extent meet its objective, which is quite simply to win votes. It will not however do anything to improve health insurance because it is simple not based in reality.
Health insurance today is very big business and has very little to do with providing health care and everything to do with making money for the insurers. Now you can of course talk to the providers all you like but, unless the government is prepared to throw a considerable sum of money at the problem then costs are going to continue rising.
Anybody who has experience of private medical treatment overseas will know only too well that a large portion of the cost of providing care in the US represents profits for the insurer and not the actual cost of providing care. You have only to seek major medical treatment in any of the superb hospitals in the Far East for example to see that you can get the very highest quality of care at a mere fraction of the cost of getting that same treatment in the US. And if you think that the quality of treatment overseas is not as good as that in the United States then think again because a lot of the hospitals throughout the Far East are staffed by very highly qualified surgeons and doctors and have some of the most up-to-date equipment to be found anywhere in the world.
It is all very well to talk about working with the insurance companies to reduce costs but the truth of the matter is that it is far from being in their interests to do so. Costs will remain at their present high levels and indeed will continue to rise until the US government decides to take over the responsibility for the provision of the majority of health care in the US.
