Jeff Fisher defends decision on Chris Johnson Jersey
Fans who came to see Titans running back Chris JohnsonJersey got their money's worth Sunday.
Yet Coach Jeff Fisher's decision to leave the team's most valuable player in the game during the latter stages of a blowout win caused plenty of those same fans to question his thinking.
Fisher defended his judgment Monday and said it had nothing to do with Chris JohnsonJersey's goal of a 2,500-yard season.
"We are trying to win football games and play players and get them ready for the long haul. And I don't go into this game with concern about any player getting hurt,'' Fisher said. "When it is time for him to come out, we'll take him out. … He is not injury-prone, he plays hard, he has been there and we are trying to execute things, not only to finish the game but also to try and create some other opportunities as we move forward.''
Chris JohnsonJersey rushed for 142 yards on 27 carries in a 38-13 win over the Raiders. Five carries came in the fourth quarter, when the Titans had a 38-6 lead. He took some hits on those runs, which went for 3, 1, 5, zero and 2 yards.
Fisher said he was trying to help Chris JohnsonJersey increase his endurance after a 19-carry preseason, and backup running back Javon Ringer didn't necessarily need the work.
"When you sub in games where you're ahead, the intention is not to keep someone from getting hurt but the intention is to get a backup player reps and opportunities,'' Fisher said. "I don't feel like Javon needs to prove anything to us. The thought process when you are very fortunate to get ahead like we did ... is to get a younger player reps."
Chris JohnsonJersey, who led the league in rushing yards (2,006) and carries (358) last season, didn't seem to mind the extra work.
"I wasn't surprised,'' he said. "I still feel we need work. When you first start out the season,NHL Jerseys, you're not going to be as good as you're going to be at the end of the year. So we're just still working right now.''
Chris JohnsonJersey had his 12th straight 100-yard game Sunday, but more than half of the total came on a 76-yard touchdown burst in the second quarter. It took Chris JohnsonJersey some time to get on track last season, when he had one 100-yard game in the first five weeks.
