So many things are a part of our life. The TV set is replaced by the entertainment center and home theater, with its expanse of electronics and volumes of media.
The kitchen counter top is buried under the very appliances that we purchased to make our lives easier.
The paperless society never materialized. In it's place is a daily shipment of junk mail, multiple phone books,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and catalogs from a thousand different stores.
Rapidly changing clothing styles, shoes for every occasion, tools of every description, all competing for a position in the landscape of our home.
The majority of American households suffer from clutter to some degree. With many,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the clutter is debilitating. So how does it get that way?
Like many behavior related issues, clutter is cumulative. It didn't happen overnight.
It started as a small pile of papers that 'just never got put away', and spread to another pile of papers, to a basket of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some books that need sorting out, some old toys and on and on.
Soon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the problem becomes imposing. Then it moves from imposing to daunting, and from daunting to seemingly insurmountable.
We need to declutter fast, but deep down we don't believe that it can be done.
No matter what we promise, deep inside we have secretly given up.
But there is help.
There are many resources that can help you declutter fast and change your life style to keep clutter at bay.
Web sites have subscriptions to email tips that will help you make the change to a clutter controlled life. They also offer the book "Declutter Fast" by Mimi Tanner, a columnist specializing in relationship advice who, of necessity, branched into clutter management.
Here are some tips I have come up with from a variety of sources that can help you get started.
Make a date to get started. And keep it.
Make reasonable goals. You can't clean the whole house in one day. Pick a room and start there.
The kitchen is a good place to start. Not only is it self contained, it is central to the operations of most households. You may go down the basement once a week, the attic once a year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the kitchen is in use every day, preparing food, doing homework, working on crafts, whatever.
Once this room is operational, it will make a significant difference in every day life.
Even if it's just as a break room from the rest of the clutter, a place to have a cup of coffee or tea without the stress of the mess.
Pick your battles. To declutter fast, you will need to make sure that your victories outnumber your defeats.
Learn to throw away. Buy two or three extra rubbish cans so you won't be tempted to 'save it for next week'.
Don't over organize. You will want to sort recent bills and papers by their category and date. But for older material,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], say 2-3 years back,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just put it all in a box marked with the year. If you need it, you can find it in just a few minutes.
When cleaning out a room, make boxes and piles for things going to places you know. Then make a box for 'I Don't Know'. Put the extras in there and don't agonize over them.
Decluttering fast still takes time. Make sure that you pace yourself so that you are not burned out.
Get a good filing system that works for your. A three drawer file cabinet doesn't up much room and has been the staple of organizations for centuries.
Take time to maintain your clean areas. It doesn't matter how fast you declutter if the clutter takes over again in a day or two.
The manageress and a guy behind a till were the only people in the shop and I made my way to the walk-in beer fridge at the back. Over the months they had got to know me well and no doubt had their own thoughts about me. But I was probably one of their best customers so they always treated me politely. They could not have failed to notice the huge amounts of booze that I was buying. As I made my way to the beer fridge the shop assistant appeared out of nowhere and greeted me. "Sawubona," he said. He seemed to stare right into my very soul. I wondered what was he thinking. He sometimes helped me to the car and today would be no different. No doubt I was a shock to him as well. Maybe I was too paranoid. Sure I was gaunt, filthy and sickly-looking but then maybe there were plenty of people like me coming in and out of the bottle store every day. Maybe all that intrigued them was where the money was coming from. That must be a mystery as I looked like a typical down and out. Bugger it. Let them ponder.
The cold beer fridge revived me a little and I always stayed a couple of minutes longer than necessary. I found my beer and asked the assistant to help me carry the case to the till. There I fumbled for the money and handed it over to the guy. He remained silent and passed me the change which I gave to the assistant. He mumbled a quiet "Siyabonga," and carried the case to the car.I felt that I had no choice any more. The liquor consumed all my mental and physical energy. The people who came and went in my life saw me as a babbling wreck. I comforted myself with the thought that they should see me when I was deprived of my beers.I stopped at the fridge long enough to sink a cold one and then walked into the office. My entrance went unnoticed and only Mary looked up and asked how I was feeling. Plonking myself down, I couldn't fail to notice that it had turned into a lovely day.
