Dish to Deliver Live TV for iPads
Satellite TV provider Dish Network plans to stream live satellite TV to iPad owners beginning this September,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to a report from the Associated Press.
The service will allow Dish subscribers to watch TV shows over WiFi or 3G and remotely select channels. To get the new functionality,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dish subscribers will need an updated Set Top Box (STB) or a Slingbox from Sling Media. The streaming app will be available for iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch users in September and for Andorid user beginning in October.
Due to hardware restrictions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], users will be limited to the same TV channel being watched on the TV connected to the Slingbox or upgraded STB. If the person watching the TV changes the channel, the channel will also change on the iPad. The one exception is for STB’s equipped with dual tuners.
The magic behind the new Dish service is based on technology from Sling Media which was purchased by Echostar, Dish’s parent company, for $380 million back in 2007.
Streaming TV services for the iPad is a hot topic with Time Warner and Comcast both working on iPad apps to deliver enhanced programming and content to their subscribers. Hulu, ABC and Netflix already have popular iPad apps available which provide subscribers access to on-demand TV shows and movies.
