While the song is that remarkable thing, a dance tune that works equally well in all mixes, what’s it actually about? It is about lies and the liars who lie about them, of course. It also seems to have a not very subtle second meaning, one that’s been frequently described in terms of animals, often white: horses [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], monkeys [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even a dog.
So, yes, it’s the perfect 3 a.m. tune. The official video for the song is an homage to Madonna’s “Open Your Heart.” And by “homage,” we mean “dull [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], witless ripoff,” the méthode champenoise to the original’s champagne.
Berlin Mix: Dirk Ever and Alex techno/hard trance version of the song has the floaty drive/build/release energy of 1990s trance with a tiny fusion of minimal trance influence. Basically, it says trance is alive, and we don’t need to go minimal to make the case.
Let’s review some of the lyrics to “White Lies,” shall we?
Paul van Dyk’s new artist album, In Between (Mute/Positiva), is up on his MySpace page in its entirety so, you know, you might want to get on that. PvD returns with several official remixes, an ambiguous message about lies in clubland, and a video whose theme was executed first (and best) by Madonna.
LA Mix: The sparkly, hiNRG rendition is happily trebleful and unobtrusively glitched and very dance-floor friendly.
Aural Float remix: This loungy, trancy chillout mix is probably the track that showcases Jessica Sutta’s vocals to their best advantage. Frankfurt-based Aural Float’s Alex Azary, Pascal FEOS and Gabriel Le Mar have been perfecting their sound, separately and together (Azary and Le Mar are members of the Saafi Brothers), for more than a decade.
And I need it going into the daylightAnd I’m looking for it into the nightThen I think about it and I can’t live without itYou’re telling me that that’s alrightCan’t get enough, can’t get enoughWhen you’re telling me the white lies, champagneIt’s getting rough and I wanna know If I’m addicted to your white lies in vain
Dave Spoon Dub: The UK DJ/producer’s progressive take on the same beats is the least trance of the lot, preferring the steady precision and reduced romanticism of full-on techno.
Jessica Sutta, the featured singer of “White Lies,” is also the video’s star; for more about the “White Lies” video and about Sutta, see Pussycat Doll’s Jessica Sutta.
