Starting a Running Program: Read This
New research shows that running, while the most popular New Year? s resolution as a way to become more physically active, and lose weight, is actually one of the most difficult to sustain. According to research new runners have twice the failure rate of other sports when it comes to continuing the activity for more than 30 days. Often even more important, but overlooked is the coordination with which a person runs, and by starting slowly the research shows that injuries and overall efficiency of movement will be greatly improved. The theory is that as you are starting a new running program your body is undergoing many changes at once. According to Dr. Zinta Zarins and exercise physiologist, you increase your metabolic rate, your ability to burn fat for energy, you also strengthen muscles and tendons, and your brain is ingrained with how to perform the movement. Whereas those that start slowly, with the recommended 5 to 10 seconds out of each minute, end up within 30 days being able to sustain a much more appropriate stride and many progress to marathons within six months, a common goal of new runners. Beyond beginning slowly the research shows that men who stick with it usually do not find a running partner until they have successfully continued with the sport for at least six months, while women tend to do better in groups, very likely for the social aspect of which running is a fantastic option.
